Gulmit Tower (5,810m) is one of the most striking and elusive peaks in the Karakoram Range, located in the Batura Muztagh above the historic village of Gulmit in the Hunza Valley. Despite its relatively modest altitude compared to the 8,000-meter giants, Gulmit Tower is notorious among elite mountaineers for its extreme technical difficulty and objective hazards. The tower features sheer, near-vertical granite faces and complex mixed terrain, making it a true test of advanced alpinism.
A History of Challenges and Attempts
Gulmit Tower is not a peak to be taken lightly. As of recent years, the tower had witnessed five previous failed attempts by various international teams before our team even arrived. The climbing history here is written in rockfall, route finding, and the sheer commitment required to tackle such a feature.
The approach to the tower is via the Bulkish Yaz Glacier, a remote and pristine area that requires a multi-day trek through beautiful alpine pastures like Jerave and Rajabel. However, the mountain itself is highly active. In one documented expedition, a large rockfall hit base camp soon after arrival, with one rock coming through a tent and striking a climber. With no other suitable site for base camp, that team was forced to abandon the attempt entirely.
This reality defines the Gulmit Tower Expedition. It is an objective for those who are not just skilled, but also patient, adaptable, and fully aware of the risks. It is a true exploratory experience in the Karakoram.
This expedition is designed for elite alpinists and experienced technical climbers seeking a serious, rarely-climbed objective. It offers full Base Camp logistics, allowing the climbing team to focus entirely on the technical ascent of this formidable tower.
“Along the ancient Silk Road, every fortress, stone bazaar, and welcoming mountain hearth tells centuries of timeless history and vibrant living heritage.”

Frequently Asked Questions
How technical is the Gulmit Tower Expedition?
Extremely technical. Gulmit Tower is a serious alpine objective featuring near-vertical granite faces and complex mixed terrain. It is not a trekking peak and is entirely unsuitable for beginners. The climbing requires advanced skills in rock, ice, and aid climbing.
What makes Gulmit Tower unique?
Gulmit Tower is unique because it is highly elusive. It has witnessed multiple failed attempts by international teams due to difficult route finding and severe objective hazards. Attempting this peak is a true exploratory adventure in the Karakoram, far from the commercialized routes of the 8,000m giants.
What prior experience is required?
Climbers must possess:
Extensive experience in multi-pitch alpine climbing
Proficiency in aid climbing and big-wall techniques
Experience climbing at altitudes above 5,000m
The ability to be self-sufficient and make critical route-finding decisions on the wall
Is Gulmit Tower suitable for beginners?
Absolutely not. This expedition is for elite alpinists only. The technical difficulty, combined with the history of rockfall and failed attempts, makes it one of the most challenging objectives in the region.
Do I need a guide for Gulmit Tower?
The climbing phase is non-guided. While our team provides full Base Camp logistics and support, you and your climbing partner(s) are responsible for the technical ascent. You must be capable of leading or following the route independently.
What are the main risks on Gulmit Tower?
The primary risk is rockfall. The mountain is highly active. In a well-documented past expedition, a large rockfall hit Base Camp, sending a rock through a climber's tent. Because there are limited suitable sites for Base Camp, teams have had to abandon the expedition entirely when Base Camp became unsafe. Other risks include avalanches, steep technical terrain, and sudden weather changes.
How do you manage the rockfall risk?
We choose the safest possible Base Camp location, but the reality of the Bulkish Yaz Glacier is that objective hazard is high. Flexibility is key. If conditions are too dangerous, the guide and team will make the collective decision to change objectives or retreat. Safety is always the priority.
What happens in case of an emergency?
We carry a satellite phone for emergencies. Helicopter evacuation can be arranged from Base Camp if needed. Above Base Camp, self-rescue is often necessary due to the technical nature of the terrain.
Do I need a permit for Gulmit Tower?
Yes. Check current regulations for climbing in the Upper Hunza region. Hunza Adventure Tours will handle any necessary permit arrangements or No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from the Ministry of Tourism.
How long is this expedition?
The expedition lasts 35 days, which includes travel, trekking to Base Camp, acclimatization, a 20-day climbing window, and the return journey.
What is the altitude of Gulmit Tower Base Camp?
Bulkish Base Camp is located at approximately 4,420 meters. Higher camps will be established on the mountain depending on the chosen route.
What is the best time to climb Gulmit Tower?
The best season is June to August, when the Karakoram experiences its most stable weather and warmest temperatures.
How much does the Gulmit Tower Expedition cost?
Costs vary depending on team size and specific requirements. The expedition cost includes full Base Camp services (chef, mess tent, porters), permits, and transport. Please contact us for a customized quote.
What is the food and accommodation like?
Hotels: Twin-sharing rooms in Islamabad, Besham, Gilgit, Chilas, and Gulmit.
Trek & Base Camp: Full-service camping. We provide dining tents, kitchen tents, and personal sleeping tents. Our chef prepares healthy, hot meals three times a day.
On the Wall: Climbers are entirely self-sufficient, carrying their own food, fuel, and portaledges.
What personal gear do I need?
You must bring all your own technical climbing gear, including ropes, a trad rack, ice screws, pitons, portaledges, and personal climbing equipment. A detailed packing list is provided upon booking.
Is there electricity at Base Camp?
Yes, we provide a generator or solar panels at Base Camp to charge batteries and electronic devices.
How do I book the expedition?
Contact us via our website or email. We will provide a detailed itinerary, quote, and booking form. A deposit confirms your spot.
Can the itinerary be customized?
Yes. We offer private departures and can customize the itinerary to your team's specific climbing objectives and dates.
